Wild Virginia: Monthly Fly Tying socials

Join us for monthly fly tying nights at Starr Hill in Scott’s Addition, hosted by Matt Phillips from Orvis Richmond on River Rd.!

The first social will be Tuesday, September 15th from 6-9 PM. Look out for more dates coming soon.

At the first Fly Tying Social, you will learn to tie some classic streamers - the clouser minnow, half & half deceiver and bulk head deceiver. Hosted by Matt Phillips from Orvis RVA

Please RSVP and indicate if you need vice, tools and materials as there are limited supplies (8 full sets). Also indicate if you can bring your own vice, tools and materials. Thank you!

Materials include:

Any stinger style hook
Bucktail
Flashabou/Krystal Flash
Dumbbell eyes
Saddle Hackle or Schlappen
Ostrich plume/herl (optional for the bulkhead deceiver )

It’s centered around bringing folks together from around our state and local communities—a shared passion for angling, hunting, and exploring Virginia’s wild lands.

CONNECTING WITH CONSERVATION

Dive into the efforts behind some of our states most reputable non-profit organizations. Meet the folks that are in the trenches—both knee deep in the streams taking water samples and knee deep in legislation, working to preserve the lands that we hold dear.

LEARNING FROM LOCAL PROFESSIONALS

Every event will feature a resident fishing and/or hunting operation, the boots on the ground, sharing insight on species, rivers and lakes, game lands, tactics, and more—focused on a particular waterway, forest habitat, or coastline.

BUILDING WITH BRANDS

Working with the local Orvis team, Starr Hill Brewery, and Wesley Hodges guides to build a space for education, connection, and exploring wild Virginia.

The James River kick off

We kicked off the Wild Virginia Series on June 30th with a night dedicated to one of our states most iconic rivers, the James. Benefitting the James River Association, it was an evening of everything Smallmouth Bass with the Wesley Hodges team—a group of eight local guides that pride themselves on the species. From conservation efforts on the watershed to populations, spawning habits, and fishing tactics, we covered everything smallmouth from its headwaters in the mountains to our backyard here in Richmond.
