Sweet Potatoes Music
Johnny Hargrove, the group's founder, was a classical guitar major at VCU. Self-taught in jazz, he has run several rock bands and classical ensembles. He's arranged music for many groups that have performed around Richmond and had music performed at the VMFA and with the non-profit Classical Revolution RVA.
Reyna Pannell was trained in classical Violin and is a self-taught singer. Coming from the classical world, Reyna has been a pivotal member in several wedding quartets and has performed solo at many venues in the Richmond, D.C. and Maryland area. Discovering her prowess for singing, she has also been featured in backing tracks for many artists in the Richmond area and is a sitting member of the local Richmond rock band Night Idea.
Stephon Larue has been playing music for most of his life. A Jazz Drum major trained at VCU he has been a popular drummer originating in the Charlottesville area. Growing up playing Violin he has expanded his musical knowledge, and by learning drums and becoming proficient enough that it became his primary instrument. He has performed with many bands in the Charlottesville and Richmond areas, performing at venues such as The National, The Jefferson, Vagabond and more. He has been in touring bands such as The Gold Connections and has been featured in many recordings in his career thus far.
Brian Cruse is one of the Sweet Potatoes’ newest members! He is a classical and jazz bass payer and has performed and recorded with a variety of ensembles including The Petersburg Symphony (principal bassist), Brunswick Band, and many more. In addition to being a Sweet Potato, Brian performs with numerous local bands, such as Afro Zen All-Stars, The Elizabeth Wise Band, and a few others.
