about the artists

Cleophus James
Cleophus James is rooted in over a decade of musical collaboration between brothers Scott & Jamie Messier, and Jack Shea. They learned to play their respective instruments alongside each other from a young age —— simultaneously building an organic chemistry while stripping away creative inhibition. In searching for a fuller sound, the trio found a natural and seamless addition in guitarist Colin Coon.

In late 2018 after setting up shop in Richmond, Virginia, the band decided it was time to write some songs, resulting in their self-produced debut EP, Extended Play. Released in April 2019, these songs take elements of pop, funk, garage rock, and wrap it up with a touch of psychedelia in a groove oriented, listener friendly package.

Their follow-up full length album, 1am, came in August 2021. Expanding on elements of indie rock, funk, and dance music, 1am exemplifies Cleophus James’ distinctive, feel-good sound. Intent on capturing the band’s improvisational tendencies, Live At Beale’s, September 25, 2021 was released in early 2022.
