America has a history of beer stretching back over 400 years to Jamestown, Virginia. Our founding fathers, including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, were home brewers themselves. Founded in 1999, Starr Hill is the second-oldest brewery in the state of Virginia (shout out to our friends at Legend Brewing!). Our original location was at the site of the first Virginia pub-brewery: Blue Ridge Brewing Company. Back then we envisioned Charlottesville, VA becoming a mecca for craft beer. Since then the craft beer industry in the Commonwealth has exploded and we’ve been proud to play our part in its growth. Many brewers leading these new breweries got their start at Starr Hill.
In 2010, we helped create the Virginia Brewers Guild, a coalition of independent, small, commercial breweries dedicated to growing the craft beer industry in the Commonwealth. Our founder was Chair of the Guild in 2014. Starr Hill also partnered with other local breweries in Albemarle and Nelson County to form the Brew Ridge Trail. Through collaborations with other Virginia breweries, we’ve brewed many great beers as well as shared knowledge on the craft and industry.
Even with 50,000 bbls capacity, but we still love to do research and development with good old fashioned homebrewing. Our current pilot batch system is a SAABCO unit where we test out new recipes and tweak current versions. Starr Hill brewers also create firkins, which are casks of small batches of our beer are given unique flavor additions, on a regular basis. We also run an IPA JamBEERee Homebrew Competition where winners can pour their beer at the festival and enter it into the Great American Beer Festival Pro-Am Competition (2016’s entry won a Silver Medal!). Stop by our Tap Room to try our latest concoction we have on top. You never know what might turn into our next release! Check out our Brewers Blog for the latest updates from our brewing team.
