CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – (March 23, 2016) Starr Hill Brewery is excited to announce the release of Four Kings IPA Pack, a very limited 12-pack featuring different variants of King of Hop Imperial IPA including Grapefruit King of Hop, Habanero King of Hop, and Lemon-Lime King of Hop alongside the original.

Four Kings IPA Pack will be released on March 24 in the Starr Hill Brewery & Tap Room before being shipped to retail April 1 on draft and in package at exclusive locations across Starr Hill’s distribution footprint.

“The hop bill in King of Hop pairs extremely well with a range of flavors, so our brewing team had a lot of fun experimenting with test batches past year,” said Starr Hill Brewmaster, Robbie O’Cain. “With Citra providing a strong citrus characteristic to the base of this beer, the fruit and spice variants bring a new level of complexity for King of Hop.”

First released in 2014 as part of the All Access Series, King of Hop Imperial IPA won the Gold Medal for the India Pale Ale Category at the Virginia Craft Brewers Festival the same year. The Four Kings and All Access release of King of Hop will also showcase new packaging artwork as part of Starr Hill’s brand refresh that rolled out in Summer 2015.

In a Starr Hill Brewery first, we partied with friends from around Charlottesville and beyond for an incredible St. Paddy’s event at the Tap Room – and man, what a great time!

The brewery transformed into an Irish pub, complete with cozy tables, belly bars and mugs brimming with some special release stouts, including our collaboration with O’Hara’s Irish Beers, Blackthorn Irish Export Stout, plus twists on favorites like Not-So-Irish Coffee Cream Stout and Peppermint Paddy’s Chocolate Stout, and finally, Dark Starr Dry Irish Stout‘s last hurrah.

In an epic St. Piggy’s Throwdown, a trio of local chefs competed for top Irish dish using locally sourced pork products from The Rock Barn, including Hamiltons’ at First & Main‘s Chef Curtis Shaver with a Corned Beef Banger and Kardinal Beer Hall‘s Chef Thomas Leroy with an Irish Banger. Congratulations to Chef Tommy Lasley of Ivy Provisions for winning with their delicious Corned Bone-In Pig Brisket and Turnip Colcannon!

The Albemarle Pipe and Drums, UVA Irish Dance Club, and Ken & Mike Farmer serenaded us with authentic Irish tunes and drinking songs, while Jon Spear Band brought some searing, funky blues tunes. Here’s our Spotify playlist of traditional and newer Irish music for you to keep the party going:

A big thanks to the restaurants, bands and everyone else for coming out! Here’s some photos below to remember a great day of crafting great times. We can’t wait until the next event–IPA JAMBEEREE!

A great playlist is all about what’s new and what’s next. That’s why we created our Heavy Rotation Series: to keep fresh styles of beer coming your way. New beer never sounded so good.

First up this March is Daily Grind Peppercorn Farmhouse Ale, with traditional aromas of spice and citrus combining with crushed peppercorns that bring earthy, bright flavors to this rustic saison farmhouse ale. Check out Brewmaster Robbie’s thoughts in our First Taste series video:

With each new release in the Heavy Rotation Series, we’ll be posting playlist of hand-picked tracks to share some of our favorite new songs and some other deep cuts we’re currently jamming out to. This first playlist is a double six-pack of songs that features some garage rock, indie pop, R&B and classic southern roots all mixed together to pair perfectly with a Daily Grind or your drink of choice this season.

(Note: The Bobby Midnight Band song from Rockfish in the video is not available on the playlist as it is yet-to-be released!)

Cheers and enjoy!

The Collaboration Tour rolls on this year with a visit to Starr Hill Brewery in Crozet from our good friends at O’Hara’s / Carlow Brewing, the largest craft brewery in Ireland.

After brewing and releasing Foreign Affair Session Red IPA (inspired in part by Reviver Red IPA) in Ireland last year, Carlow’s head brewer, Conor Donoghue, came across the pond to brew a U.S.-based collaboration.

Where Foreign Affair was brewed and released for the 4th of July in Ireland, this new brew will be unveiled and featured at Starr Hill’s St. Paddy’s Day celebration on March 19th.

IMG_0504

For this Virginia-based collaboration, Brewmaster Robbie O’Cain was inspired to craft a classic Irish Export Stout in the tradition of the higher gravity styles, particularly O’Hara’s Leann Folláin Extra Irish Stout. Robbie and Conor built a recipe using Maris Otter Crystal and Chocolate malts, Golden Oats, and East Kent Goldings hops.

IMG_0717The collaboration will be named Blackthorn, a nod to an ancient Celtic tradition of celebrating the changing of the seasons. Each year, the blooming of blackthorn in Ireland signaled the start of Spring. Blackthorn wood is also commonly used when making the shillelagh, the traditional wooden walking stick associated with Irish folklore.

IMG_0740

IMG_0731Brewer Timmy (see Production Team) worked alongside Robbie and Conor by milling, mashing in, and adding the Golden Oats to give this wonderfully rich, dark stout a creamy mouthfeel. The finished product promises to be a robust, full-flavored stout with a smooth body.

During the brew day, our local NBC station stopped by to chat with Robbie and Conor about the collaboration. Check out the video on their website.

IMG_0743

In honor of our cross-Atlantic collaboration, we invited our friends from the Fans of Virginia Craft Breweries Facebook group and their founder, David Hunter, to the Tap Room for a special, interactive Q&A with both Robbie and Conor.

IMG_0784

IMG_0801An evening of great conversation covered brewing scenes in both Ireland and Virginia/U.S. and other topics like Irish brewing history, trends of new styles in the US, and how to push each industry forward. Questions were taken from the live audience, as well as from fans following the event online from the Facebook group.

IMG_0799

A big thanks to Conor and the team at O’Hara’s/Carlow for helping put together this tremendous collaboration, and also to David and the Fans of Virginia Craft Breweries for an awesome event! We can’t wait to share Blackthorn Irish Export Stout with everyone at our St. Paddy’s Day celebration next month. Until then… Sláinte!

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – (February 17, 2016) Starr Hill Brewery is excited to announce the release of ten new beers in 2016, including the launch of the Heavy Rotation Series, two new seasonal releases, and a revamped Debut Series lineup. In addition to releasing nearly one new beer each month, Starr Hill is retiring Dark Starr Stout and Starr Pils German Pilsner as year-round brands.

Inspired to craft an ongoing playlist of new beer styles, Starr Hill is launching the Heavy Rotation Series in the spring. Pairing fresh beer with fresh music, each of the four releases will be accompanied by a handpicked mixtape, available through Starr Hill’s Spotify account. The first beer in the Heavy Rotation Series, Daily Grind Peppercorn Farmhouse Ale, will start spinning this March in six-packs and on draft.

“One of the coolest parts about the Heavy Rotation Series is the opportunity to focus our brewing efforts on new and interesting styles that are not IPA-focused,” said Starr Hill’s Brewmaster, Robbie O’Cain. “We have some really interesting new yeast strains, additives and processes to feature in this lineup.”

Starr Hill heads into festival season with a new summer seasonal: The Hook Grapefruit Session IPA. This pairs real grapefruit zest with Apollo, Citra, and Mosaic hops to create a bright, refreshing beer highlighting citrus hop flavors. The Hook will be followed by Last Leaf Maple Brown Ale as the fall seasonal offering. This smooth-bodied English Brown Ale brewed with real Virginia maple syrup will be a welcome alternative to the pumpkin pandemonium of fall.

The Debut Series represents the first time in the spotlight for each release in this draft-only lineup, showcasing the brewing team’s passion for creating big, high-gravity beers. First up in early January is a Double Chocolate Imperial Stout, brewed with enormous amounts of cocoa powder and dry-nibbed to create a rich chocolate flavor and aroma.

“2016 will feature the strongest lineup of beers Starr Hill has ever brewed,” said O’Cain. “Our brewing team is excited to develop a variety of styles while utilizing different techniques, ingredients, and equipment, including our new centrifuge.”

To make room for these upcoming additions to the Starr Hill lineup of beers, two year-round brands will be phased out in January 2016: Dark Starr and Starr Pils. First released in 2000, Dark Starr Stout was Starr Hill’s longest-running brand and has won more national and international awards than any other Dry Irish Stout in the country. Starr Pils was introduced in 2012 as a light, sessionable summer seasonal.

“Dark Starr and Starr Pils played an important part in our brewery’s history,” said Starr Hill’s VP of Sales, Duke Fox. “But this shift away from year-round offerings and towards increased rotation reflects the preferences of both our fans and our team; we are all passionate about continuing to find and share creative, new beers. In 2016, Starr Hill has done just that, and more.”

In January and February when the weather refuses to cooperate, nothing is more satisfying than a big bowl of stew. This simple recipe, adapted from Bon Appetit and updated with The Love Wheat Beer, is sure to keep you warm through the winter!

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 skinless, boneless chicken thighs
  • Kosher salt
  • 3 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 Tbsp ground cumin
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 bottle The Love Wheat Beer
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 15-oz cans chickpeas, rinsed, drained
  • 1/2 cup chopped drained roasted red peppers from a jar
  • 2 Tbsp (or more) fresh lemon juice
  • country-style bread, for dipping
  • 3 Tbsp coarsely chopped flat-leaf parsley

Preparation

    1. Heat 2 Tbsp. oil in a medium pot over medium-high heat. Season chicken with salt; add to pot and cook, turning once, until browned, 8–10 minutes. Transfer to a plate. Reduce heat to low and let oil cool for 1 minute; add garlic and cook, stirring often, until fragrant, 30–60 seconds. Add cumin, tomato paste, and red pepper flakes; stir until a smooth paste forms, about 1 minute.

    1. Add reserved chicken with any accumulated juices, along with bay leaves, 1 bottle of The Love and 2 cups water. Scrape up any browned bits.

    1. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, occasionally stirring, until chicken is tender, about 20 minutes.

    1. Transfer chicken to a plate. Add chickpeas to pot; bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Shred chicken; add to stew. Add red peppers. Stir in 2 Tbsp. lemon juice; simmer for 1 minute. Season with salt and more lemon juice, if desired. Ladle soup in serving bowls and serve with sliced bread. Garnish with parsley and serve immediately. Don’t forget The Love to wash it down!

Cheers!

Cutting her teeth as Creative Director at Charlottesville startup Musictoday (now Delivery Agent) Storyware Creative Director Wyndsor Hug has honed her design skills over a 15 year career working with – among many others – a string of music industry clients, including RCA Records, ATO Records and Dave Matthews Band.

Wyndsor Hug: Creative Director at Storyware
Wyndsor Hug: Creative Director at Storyware

In 2015, Wyndsor and Storyware took on the immense task of redesigning Starr Hill Brewery’s entire brand and packaging artwork. She quickly absorbed the culture and vision of the Starr Hill team, translating them into a portfolio of beautiful, eye-catching designs inspired by vintage concert posters and the surrounding landscape of Central Virginia.

At Storyware music is still key to her creative process. Wyndsor recently shared a glimpse into her world as Creative Director (and a few of her favorite songs to work to) on Storyware’s website. Here’s some of what she had to say below (visit Storyware’s website for the full Q&A):

Where do you look for inspiration?

I define inspiration as anything that inspires creative activity. Most designers will tell you that inspiration comes from everything and that’s true for me as well. I get inspiration from people and especially my clients since they know their product and have the first ideas. Music is a huge way that I keep myself focused and in a creative mindset. I find inspiration in the design process itself and being engaged in problem-solving and what I’m making. Design is a good idea and good ideas often come from bad ideas! Other things that inspire me and keep the creativity flowing… coffee, the colors and shapes in nature, architecture, wine, stepping away from the MacBook, current events, other designers…

What creative projects are you most proud of?

I’ve worked on many projects with a ton of talented people, but I’m really proud of the brand redesign and packaging work we’re doing for Starr Hill Brewery and the consistency we’ve brought to their beer lineup. It was a big challenge for us. We redesigned their core beer line and a couple of seasonal brands in just a few months. It was really fun to look at the personality and existing packaging for each beer (a lot of these beers have been around awhile and have a pretty loyal customer base) and then redesign that packaging. The team at Starr Hill took a risk with their updated brand and packaging, and as a designer, that is always exciting and rewarding.

Read the whole Q&A on Storyware’s website and listen to Wyndsor’s work playlist!
