A great playlist is all about what’s new and what’s next. That’s why we created our Heavy Rotation Series: to keep fresh styles of beer coming your way. New beer never sounded so good.

Up next is Warm Up Winter Ale, a dark ale spiced with cinnamon, cocoa, nutmeg and vanilla.

With each new release in the Heavy Rotation Series, we’ll be posting playlist of hand-picked tracks to share some of our favorite new songs and some other deep cuts we’re currently jamming out to. This playlist begins with sounds of twinkling synth and shivering guitar chords and builds in temperature (and tempo) to keep you moving and warmed up. A double six-pack of tunes that combine flavors of folk, funk, R&B, rock and pop are all mixed together to pair with a bottle of Warm Up Winter Ale in the coming winter season and at our Holiday Industry Night!

Cheers and enjoy!

The Brew Ridge Trail, Virginia’s Original Beer Destination, has come together once again to celebrate award-winning local craft beer in Central Virginia. To honor this country’s veterans and participate in a statewide tribute to the 75th anniversary of the United States entry into World War II, Brew Ridge breweries will host in a week of special events leading up to the release of a new collaboration brew.

Brewing took place this Veterans Day on Friday November 11th, 2016 at Wild Wolf Brewing Company. Brewers from Blue Mountain Brewery, Blue Mountain Barrel House, Devils Backbone, South Street, Starr Hill and Wild Wolf collaborated on a A Beer to End All Wars, a collaboration beer to honor those who have served in WWI and WWII. Each participating brewery provided a brewer and various ingredients that comprise this worldly recipe. In the spirit of the celebration and to honor all veterans, the recipe hosts ingredients from England, France, Belgium, Ireland, Czechoslovakia, Chile, Canada, Japan, India, and The United States (countries from both sides of the wars).

Starting this Monday, November 28th, Brew Ridge Trail Week will feature unique events at each brewery. Please join us for our Industry Holiday Party at Starr Hill Brewery & Tap Room this Tuesday, November 29th! The culminating event will be the official release of “A Beer to End All Wars” at Wild Wolf on December 8th, followed by a series of tap takeover events at locations across the Commonwealth, dates listed below:

It was 10:02 AM. The Starr Hill crew was sprinting towards the Bellco Theater in downtown Denver.

With the same haste as the craft beer enthusiasts that flocked to Denver for three days of unlimited beer tastings at the Great American Beer Festival, the team was booking it to the festival’s culmination: the awards ceremony. Gretchen Greggs, Starr Hill’s Marketing and Sales Coordinator, was neck-and-neck with Marketing Analyst and Tap Room Manager, Allie Hochman.

The gang had come from their fourth consecutive brunch at Snooze: an AM Eatery, which had been cut short by the realization: “Oh shit, we’re late!” The bill was paid, Brewer Timmy Green dialed up an Uber, and they were off.

As Gretchen’s hand touched the door to the Bellco Theater auditorium, they heard a muffled announcement: “For silver, STARR HILL BREWERY with VERNAL EQUINOX.”

While the Starr Hill crew was nearly late for their moment of recognition, the story behind this award-winning brew started much earlier with the IPA JamBEERee. The brewery’s first festival in honor of the incredible variety of India Pale Ales also featured a Homebrew JamBEERee Competition where homebrewers from across Virginia put their best IPAs to the test of the Starr Hill brewing team.

Enter Gary Layton, avid homebrewer from Northern VA.

His bottled submission arrived on the first of June, a recipe featuring Maris Otter malt base with various crystal malts, a traditional British Ale yeast strain, and flavoring hops Equinox and Galaxy. The Starr Hill Brewery judges deemed it a quintessential British IPA, which stood out among over 50 competitive entries, including many decent recipes in the American style. Layton’s prize: a chance to produce a batch of his IPA recipe at Starr Hill Brewery’s facility in Crozet and submit it to the Great American Beer Festival’s Pro-Am Competition.

Brewmaster Robbie, Gary Layton, and brewer Jake Foster.

Fast forward three months…

Brendan Romero-Salyer, Starr Hill’s Northern VA sales rep, had been brewing up his own anticipation for his first time attending the massive beer festival. With 3,800 beers to sample from 800 breweries, who wouldn’t be psyched? Representing Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region, Starr Hill sampled an epic lineup of Reviver Red IPA, Whiter Shade White IPA, Basketcase American Helles, Jomo Vienna-Style Lager and Little Red RooStarr Coffee Cream Stout. Great times were had hanging with neighbors from Three Notch’d Brewery, Blue Mountain, South Street, as well as new friends from around the industry. With 10,000 beer lovers per day brimming the airplane hangar-sized Convention Center, the team’s excitement and Starr Hill pride was on display all weekend.

Brendan Romero-Salyer, Timmy Green, and Gretchen Greggs reppin’ that Pro-Am Silver Medal

Saturday morning Gretchen pried open the door to the theater and scampered down the aisle with Allie to accept the silver medal with Brewmaster Robbie O’Cain. This first award of the day was one of 14 medals earned by Virginia breweries at GABF in 2016, the most this region has taken home since 2013. The Starr Hill team gathered onstage and accepted the medal they’d bring with them back to the Commonwealth – where it had all began.

Robbie, Allie, and Gretchen accepting the Silver Medal for Vernal Equinox!

Vernal Equinox British IPA is now available on tap in the Starr Hill Brewery Tap Room in Crozet, VA! Come by and enjoy a pint of this and many other award-winning brews!

Cheers to everyone who came out to celebrate our 2nd annual Oktoberfest event at Starr Hill Brewery!

Attendees sported pretzel necklaces while competing in heated games of giant Jenga. The UVA win had Wahoos young and old in good spirits and bursting with cheers! Legions of festies and fans packed into the photo booth to fit their crew in one frame. Tunes started flowing from the Tap Room stage at 2; Travis Elliott got the groove going, serving up an infectious solo set and Chamomile and Whiskey brought down the house with their eclectic mountain funk. In short, an amazing day was had by all, with friends and family from around Central Virginia enjoying steins filled with German-style beers, tasty bratwursts, and some incredible live and local music.

A big thanks to our amazing chefs: Chef Curtis Shaver of Hamiltons’ at First & Main / Sandwich Lab, Chef Tommy Lasley of Ivy Provisions / Fry’s Spring Station, and Chef Angelo Vangelopoulos of Ivy Inn Restaurant for their incredible food. Congratulations to Curtis and the Hamilton’s crew for retaining their crown as the top Oktoberfest dish!

If you missed out, there’s still a chance to try some of the new and limited-release German-style beers in the Tap Room, including the new Berliner Weisse, Festie Oktoberfest Lager, Helles Bock, and Warehouse Pils.

Here’s our Spotify playlist of Oktoberfest polka and drinking songs for you to keep the party going:

Below are just some of our favorite shots from our photo booth and fans on Instagram. Check out the rest of the photo album on Facebook to tag your friends and share! Thanks to @mrwool422, @starrhill_ga, @mrswagner09, and Martin Norman for photos.

Can’t wait to see everyone back at the brewery for St. Paddy’s Day next year on March 18th!

It’s about that time of year — the trees that lined highways leading to music festivals and summer getaways have given way to leaves that crunch underfoot; The sun hits snooze for us, for just a couple minutes longer; We trade in our Double IPAs by the pool for Maple Brown Ales by the fire (or at least a Coffee IPA!). This light and balanced quick bread recipe, adapted from Cooking Light and updated with our Last Leaf Maple Brown Ale, will make the transition all the more smooth.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 small whole Bosc pears
  • 1½ tsp all-purpose flour (to brush the pears)
  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 6 Tbsp butter, softened
  • ¾ cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup Last Leaf Maple Brown Ale
  • ½ cup fat-free sour cream
  • ¼ cup maple syrup

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 350°. Coat a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan lightly with all-purpose flour.
  2. Bring 4 cups water and granulated sugar to boil in a medium saucepan. Add pears; reduce heat to medium, and cook at a medium-low boil for 5 minutes or just until pears start to soften. Remove pears from pan; cool slightly. Trim bottoms of pears to the height of the loaf pan. Lightly brush 1½ tsp flour over the bottom two-thirds of each pear and place in loaf pan.
  3. Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt, stirring well with a whisk.
  4. Flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

  5. Place brown sugar and butter in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at high speed until well blended. Add eggs, one at a time, beating each egg well. Beat in vanilla.
  6. Ingredients wet & dry!

  7. Combine Last Leaf, sour cream, and syrup, stirring well with a whisk. Beating at low speed, add flour mixture and liquid mixture into a third large bowl alternately, beginning and ending with the flour. Beat just until combined.
  8. Scrape batter into your loaf pan, around the pears.
  9. Ready for the oven

  10. Bake at 350° for 50 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs clinging. Let cool 10 minutes in pan on wire rack before removing. Quick bread can cool completely on a wire rack or wooden slab, as pictured.
  11. “Pear” with a bottle of Last Leaf!

Cheers!

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – (September 6, 2016) Starr Hill Brewery is bringing back the Bavarian experience to Central Virginia with a unique Oktoberfest event on Saturday, October 1 at the Tap Room in Crozet, Virginia. The Brewery will transform into a German Brauhaus, complete with Beer Hall and an Oktoberfest tent. New and limited release German-style beers will be poured and paired with traditional food offerings, along with live music, games, and a great cause.

“This is a great annual event where we can honor Germany’s rich beer history with a true celebration of Oktoberfest,” says Starr Hill’s Brewmaster, Robbie O’Cain. “It’s from this deep tradition that we’re able to brew so many unique styles for the festival, including some first-time recipes for the brewery.”

Beer steins will be brimming with Starr Hill’s world class German-style brews, including a tart and refreshing Berliner Weisse, brewed just for the occasion, and the new Basketcase American Helles Lager. The event will also see the return of Starr Hill’s Oktoberfest favorites, Festie Oktoberfest Lager, Helles Bock, Warehouse Pils, The Love Hefeweizen and Jomo Vienna-Style Lager, alongside new fall seasonal release Last Leaf Maple Brown Ale. Brewers from the Starr Hill team will also hold an educational “Bier Session” covering the history of German brewing techniques and beer styles.

A “Bratwurst Battle” pitting local chefs using locally sourced pork products from The Rock Barn will be a competition for the top Oktoberfest dish amongst attendees. Chef Curtis Shaver of Hamiltons’ at First & Main / Sandwich Lab returns to defend his 2015 Oktoberfest title against Chef Tommy Lasley of Ivy Provisions / Fry’s Spring Station and Angelo Vangelopoulos of Ivy Inn Restaurant.

Starr Hill Oktoberfest will feature live and local music from Chamomile and Whiskey, plus games of corn hole (or “schwarze loch”), bier pong, and raffles for great prizes. As part of Starr Hill’s Cheers for Charity program, $1 for every beer sold at the event and throughout October will be donated to the Shenandoah Park Trust.

The Starr Hill Oktoberfest event will run from 12-7 PM on Saturday, October 1. Tickets for the event include three tokens, each redeemable for one beer or food serving, as well as a limited edition half-liter Oktoberfest mug for the first 400 sold. Additional tokens for beer and food will be available for purchase during the event. Advance tickets for $17 are now available for purchase in the Starr Hill Brewery & Tap Room and at StarrHill.com/Oktoberfest.

The best part of waking up is beer. Okay maybe that’s not always a great idea, but on a crisp fall morning our Last Leaf Maple Brown Ale is the perfect breakfast beer for both drinking and cooking. We whipped up a batch of Maple Brown Pancakes and you should too!

INGREDIENTS (makes 10-12)

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or pancake mix)
  • 1 egg + 1 additional yolk
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp canola oil
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 bottle (12oz.) of Last Leaf Maple Brown Ale
  • Butter or cooking spray
  • ¾ cup maple syrup
  • Blueberries for topping (optional)

DIRECTIONS

In a bowl, add the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and baking powder, whisk to combine. In a small bowl, add the egg, the additional yolk, vanilla and the oil. Whisk until well combined. Make a well in the dry ingredients, add the egg mixture and 1/2 cup of beer to the center and whisk to combine.

Heat a skillet or griddle until hot. Brush with melted butter or spray with butter flavored cooking spray. Pour about ¼ cup of the batter onto the hot griddle. Once bubbles appear in the middle of the pancakes and the edges start to look dry, flip the pancakes and cook on the other side until cooked through, about 5 minutes total (2.5 minutes per side).

Take your syrup to the next level by cooking ¾ cup of syrup and ½ cup of Last Leaf in a pot on the stove over high heat for about 10 minutes, until thickened and reduced to a caramel-y syrup. A perfect pairing with your pancakes and your pint. Cheers!
