CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – (March 21, 2017) Starr Hill Brewery is thrilled to announce the 2017 release of their Four Kings IPA Pack, a limited 12-pack returning with three new variants of King of Hop Imperial IPA. This year’s Four Kings IPA Pack features Orange King of Hop, Mango Habanero King of Hop, and Coffee King of Hop versions available on draft and in package this April.

First released in 2014 as part of the All Access Series, King of Hop Imperial IPA won the Gold Medal for the India Pale Ale Category at the Virginia Craft Brewers Festival the same year. The 2017 variants expand on the success of the 2016 batches, all painstakingly brewed with all natural ingredients including hand-zested orange peel, whole coffee beans, mango puree and habaneros.

“King of Hop has proved to be an excellent canvas to showcase each of these additives, allowing for further exploration into the complexity of the IPA category,” said Starr Hill Brewmaster, Robbie O’Cain. “We are excited to offer three new variants this year, each creating a unique and delicious take on this style of beer.”

The Four Kings IPA Pack will be released on Friday, March 24 in the Starr Hill Brewery Tap Room in Crozet, Virginia. Four Kings will be available on draft and in 12-packs at exclusive locations across Starr Hill’s distribution footprint by April 1. To find where Four Kings and other Starr Hill beers are available, visit www.StarrHill.com/Beer-Finder.

The first Four Kings 4K trail run will be held at Starr Hill Brewery on Sunday, April 9 to benefit Crozet Trails Crew, Starr Hill’s Cheers for Charity partner in the Tap Room during this month. For more details on the race and to register, visit www.StarrHill.com/Four-Kings-4K.

A great playlist is all about what’s new and what’s next. That’s why we created our Heavy Rotation Series: to keep fresh styles of beer coming your way. New beer never sounded so good.

With each new release in the Heavy Rotation Series, we’ll be posting a playlist of hand-picked tracks to share some of our favorite new songs and some deep cuts we’re currently jamming out to. Up next is Warehouse Pils, a German Pilsner dry-hopped with German hops, golden in color with a mildly floral flavor and a crisp malt finish.

This playlist is both the punch clock and the vacation. The cup of coffee and the daydream, working side by side. Who says you can’t have a little fun at work? I guess that’s why we’re in craft beer.

Here’s a double six-pack of our favorite tunes to bump in the brewery warehouse, courtesy of our production team DJs Skip Roberts, Billy Lancaster, and Ryan Gruntz. It combines the flavors of garage, funk, folk and rock to create a great pairing for a bottle of Warehouse Pils and put a little spring in your step when there’s work to be done. Cheers and enjoy!

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – (January 31, 2017) Starr Hill Brewery is excited to announce the opening of its Pilot Brewery & Side Stage location in Roanoke, Virginia. Starr Hill’s first satellite taproom, scheduled to open Fall 2017, will serve as a venue to showcase new beers and new music, with innovative brewers and local artists creating side by side in the Star City of the South.

starrhill-roanoke_vertical_color

Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage will house a custom 5-barrel brewing system, the company’s first for producing small batches since moving from its original brewpub location in 2005. The pilot system will provide Starr Hill with increased flexibility for brewing upwards of 50 limited release batches of ales, lagers and wild beers each year, led by Brewmaster Robbie O’Cain.

“With flagship brands taking precedence at our production facility in Crozet, this pilot system presents us with the opportunity to really show off our brewing talents and new ideas to fans in Roanoke and beyond,” says O’Cain. “Both facilities supporting each other allows us to create a variety of unique styles with virtually infinite access to the best hops and malts in the industry.”

The Side Stage portion of the taproom will feature live performances several nights a week from up-and-coming artists in the rich tradition of local music from Southwest Virginia. Starr Hill will host a quarterly showcase concert at the brewery to celebrate the best in new music paired with new beer releases. Additional programming and events will be cultivated through partnerships with local artisans, record shops, music venues, and a variety of food trucks from the area.

“Starr Hill’s identity, from the Charlottesville Music Hall to pouring beer at the first FloydFest, is deeply rooted in live music,” says Jack Goodall, Marketing Manager for Starr Hill Brewery. “Roanoke is going to be a great fit for Starr Hill with our shared history and culture of experiencing music and life outdoors in the beautiful Blue Ridge.”

The Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage will be housed within a historic building on 6 Old Whitmore Avenue in the redeveloped industrial neighborhood of The Bridges, part of Downtown Roanoke’s Riverside District. In the shadow of Mill Mountain and the Roanoke Star, train tracks of the Norfolk Southern Railway neighboring the new location echo the setting at Starr Hill’s main production facility, just north on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Crozet. Nearby attractions include the Roanoke River Greenway, a kayak/canoe launch site, and Dr. Pepper Park outdoor event venue.

“Starr Hill Pilot Brewery & Side Stage completes our vision of a versatile mix of amenities on the Jefferson side of The Bridges,” says Aaron Ewert, Project Manager at The Bridges. “Not only are they the largest independent craft brewery in Virginia, Starr Hill is also one of the best breweries on the East Coast with 22 medals from major beer competitions. Their music hall origin and love for the outdoors make Starr Hill the perfect compliment to Dr. Pepper Park and the newly created Innovation District.”

Information about hiring positions and official opening dates will be posted at a later date on www.StarrHill.com. Follow updates on social media via Starr Hill’s Roanoke accounts: Facebook.com/StarrHillRoanoke, Twitter: @SH_Roanoke and Instagram: @StarrHillRoanoke.

Introducing our 11th Release in our Debut Series…

Scotch Ale!

This potent ale features a full, chewy body, brimming with the malt-driven sweetness of caramel. Aromas of candied toffee and dark fruit burst from the huge, complex malt.

A little background on this classic style: English and Scottish Ales were historically named and referred to by the wholesale price by hogshead (a measurement of volume) in shillings, plus tax. This designation was intended to be proportionate to the ale’s gravity and ABV.

Still, modern brews of this style embrace the historical nomenclature, a nod to its continued use in Scotland to this day. In Brewmaster Robbie O’Cain’s original notes of this recipe, his target was a 120-shilling, or a range of about 7.5—9% ABV.

scotch-ale-gif

Scotch Ales are so-named not for malt whiskey, a common misconception, but for the Scottish Ale yeast used in production. This Debut brew uses Wyeast 1728 – Scottish Ale yeast.

In this particular style of beer, technique is key; recipe- and temperature-dependent factors drive the ultimate flavor. Scotch Ales are fermented at a lower temperature, not unlike modern lager brewing. This cooling process diminishes ester formation, an element which would otherwise add fruitiness to the beer. Instead, this Scotch Ale’s specialty malts are responsible for the hints of deep, dark fruit on the nose, which are accentuated by an extended period of cold maturation. That’s six weeks of anticipation in the tank, to be precise.

Though both styles are brewed in Highland tradition (and are often confused for one another), what distinguishes a Scotch Ale from a Scottish Ale is higher alcohol. At 7.4% ABV, Starr Hill’s Debut #11 Scotch Ale is a beer that packs its punch, but is a sustainable choice of beverage to keep you warm all night long.

“Here in Virginia, the coldest months of the year tend to be January, February — and that’s exactly when you want a bigger beer to have with you fireside,” O’Cain said of his inspiration to premiere the Scotch Ale.

This brew is high alcohol, malty, and warming… all of the fixings for a decent winter beer to switch things up in what is typically stout season.

Debut #11 Scotch Ale is on tap in the Starr Hill Brewery Tap Room and has already been garnering a lot of attention as a pint favorite. Look for it on tap at your local watering hole! Cheers, and enjoy.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – (December 6, 2016) Starr Hill Brewery proudly announces the return of IPA JamBEERee on Saturday, May 6, 2017. Virginia’s largest craft beer festival celebrating local India Pale Ales will once again be held at the Hangar Park, across from Starr Hill Brewery & Tap Room in Crozet, VA. Starr Hill will also hold their Homebrew JamBEERee Competition, which produced a Silver Medal Winner at the Great American Beer Festival Pro-Am in 2016.

This year’s IPA JamBEERee will showcase a wide variety of Virginia breweries pouring their hoppiest styles and the release of several rare and exclusive offerings from Starr Hill, along with some additional non-IPA options. The day will be soundtracked by a lineup of live and local music, food trucks, recreational games, and proceeds to benefit a local non-profit organization.

“The opportunity for experimentation within the IPA style is truly remarkable, and it’s always fun to brew with new ingredients and techniques,” said Robbie O’Cain, Starr Hill’s Brewmaster. “IPA JamBEERee is unique in the way it showcases the best Virginia-made IPAs from craft brewers and homebrewers alike.”

The Homebrew JamBEERee Competition, judged by the Starr Hill brewing team, will be held in April with the top three entries invited to pour their beers at IPA JamBEERee. The first place winner will go on to brew a batch of their recipe with Starr Hill, which will be entered into the Great American Beer Festival’s Pro-Am Competition. 2016’s Homebrew JamBEERee winner, Gary Layton, and his Vernal Equinox English IPA took home the Silver Medal at the GABF Pro-Am.

Details on participating breweries, performers, tickets, and homebrew competition will be revealed in early February on JamBEERee.com. Follow updates via Starr Hill’s social media accounts: Facebook.com/StarrHillBrewery, Twitter @StarrHill, and Instagram @StarrHillBrewery.
