‘Tis the season for earmworms

Sick of jingle bells yet? Since December 1 (and really, before Thanksgiving) you’ve been bombarded nonstop with the classic winter jams known and loved (if somewhat begrudgingly) the world over, so we understand.

That’s why we compiled a bumpin’ mix of lively tunes to keep your spirits bright that’s anything but routine. So when you’re standing in the gift wrap aisle of your local megastore, you can hum tracks by Rogue Wave, Vulfpeck, or Run-D.M.C.

The playlist begins with sounds of shivering guitar, but builds quickly in temperature (and tempo) with shimmering synth and icy beats to heat things up and keep you moving! A festive 16-pack of songs that combine flavors of dance, funk, R&B, indie rock and pop all mixed together for the coming winter season.

Wishing you Good Cheer and Good Beer this #StarrHoliday

It happens every year: The weather gets steadily colder and holidays draw nearer, and all you want to do is curl up in a blanket and watch the same movies you’ve seen hundreds of times. In fact, the only finger we’re willing to lift this time of year holds a glass of Little Red Roostarr Coffee Cream Stout …And a tray of awesome, brew-infused cookies. Feast your eyes and your beer bellies on these crunchy, chewy cookies:

Chocolate Walnut Roostarr Cookies

    • 1/3 cup butter, softened
    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 tsp coffee grounds (I used Cafe Bustelo)
    • 1 tsp baking soda
    • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
    • 2 egg whites
    • ⅓ cup low-fat vanilla yogurt
    • 1 ¾ cup all-purpose flour
    • ½ cup Little Red Roostarr
    • Handful of chopped walnuts
    • ½ cup powdered sugar

Instructions

    1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
    2. Beat butter with an electric mixer for about 30 seconds, or until smooth.
    3. Add brown sugar, cocoa powder, coffee grounds, baking soda, and cinnamon. Beat until combined, scraping the sides of the bowl when necessary.
    4. Beat in egg whites and yogurt until combined.
    5. Beat in as much flour as you can (about half). When dough is too tough to continue beating, add the Little Red Roostarr and remaining flour. Beat until combined. If dough is too thick to fully combine, finish mixing with rubber spatula.
    6. Place dough into ziplock bag and freeze for 30 minutes.
    7. Place powdered sugar in shallow bowl.
    8. Pinch tablespoon-sized pieces of dough and drop into powdered sugar, one at a time, completely coating each one. Shape with hands as needed to form balls and place about 2in apart on a cookie sheet.
    9. Place a few chopped walnuts on top of each cookie, lightly pressing them into the dough.
    10. Bake for 10min and increase time by 2min intervals as needed, until a toothpick inserted to the middle of each cookie comes out clean.
    11. Let cool and enjoy with Little Red Roostarr!

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – (December 6, 2017) Starr Hill Brewery is set to kick off its 2018 tour with a fresh lineup of beers, headlined by their new flagship brand: Front Row Golden Ale. Starr Hill will also release Looking Glass IPA as a new spring seasonal, several classics in the Heavy Rotation Series, a revamped All Access Series lineup, as well as some specialty variety packs including the new BoomBox can pack.

Front Row Golden Ale will become the sixth member of the core lineup in early 2018 as Starr Hill’s newest flagship brand available year-round. This light and refreshing beer is the perfect balance of Honey malt and Cascade hops for a smooth body and clean finish.

“We originally brewed this Golden Ale for the summer music festival season last year, and it just took off,” says Starr Hill Brewmaster, Robbie O’Cain. “Front Row is a classic, approachable beer that we’re really excited to share.”

Front Row celebrates savoring life’s moments in-person and sharing the experience with others. Starr Hill will launch Front Row on draft, followed by six-pack bottles, this spring with a Golden Ticket Giveaway contest. Fans can enter to win concert tickets and an exclusive Front Row Tour Pack of prizes.

Front Row Golden Ale will also be available in 16oz. cans and showcased in the new BoomBox 8-pack alongside Northern Lights IPA. This unique package will feature four cans each of each brand, a link to free music content, and will be available year-round starting in March 2018.

Looking Glass IPA will launch in early February as Starr Hill’s new spring seasonal brand, replacing Reviver Red IPA. Loaded with notes of juicy pineapple, mango and passion fruit, this IPA packs big hop aroma and flavor with minimal bitterness. The Hook Grapefruit Session IPA will again bring back the summer season before Last Leaf Maple Brown Ale returns in the fall.

The Heavy Rotation Series spins an ongoing playlist of new beer and music with something fresh available in 6-packs and on draft every three months. 2018 sees the return of some classic favorites from Starr Hill’s brewing archives.

  • Amber Ale (March), the award-winning Irish-Style Red, returns with a deep honey color and medium body, leading to rich caramel and malt flavor with a slightly sweet finish.
  • Hibiscus Lager (June) is a refreshing take on an American-style Helles lager with the addition of hibiscus flowers, providing tangy floral notes and a beautiful pink hue.
  • Festie Oktoberfest Lager (September), a smooth and malty tribute to the great German Märzen, repeats for a second year in the lineup.
  • Dark Starr Dry Irish Stout (December) has won more national and international awards than any other Dry Irish Stout in the country. Brewed with roasted barley, with hints of coffee and dark chocolate.

Starr Hill’s All Access Series showcases some of the brewery’s most unique and inspired beers. Now a draft-only limited series, Starr Hill will release a different All Access brand every two months, featuring old favorites and new recipes developed at the Pilot Brewery & Side Stage in Roanoke.

  • Denali Double IPA (January) highlights this hop’s huge pineapple and berry notes to nicely complement the citrus flavors of additional hops.
  • Berliner Weisse (March) is a refreshingly tart and flavorful German-style wheat beer presents a harmony between yeast and lactic acid.
  • NE-Style IPA (May) is massively hopped with a focus on tropical citrus flavors and just the right amount of haze.
  • Roanoke Pilot Brew (July) to be a non-IPA style announced at a later date.
  • Roanoke Pilot Brew (September) to be an IPA style announced at a later date.
  • Little Red Roostarr (November) is our smooth milk stout with locally roasted coffee from Red Rooster Coffee Roasters in Floyd, VA.

The new Jam Pack now showcases a 12-pack of 16oz. cans, including Northern Lights IPA, Grateful Pale Ale, Front Row Golden Ale, and The Love Wheat Beer. Jam Pack will be released in mid-May and available just in time for summer.

Snow Blind Doppelbock, to me, is the Holiday season in a glass. It’s got great caramel, molasses and chocolate aromas. Very well balanced, you’ll taste some mild sweetness up front with the beer being dominated by a lot of dark fruit flavors like dates and raisins. You still get some chocolate, more cocoa than dark. And while it doesn’t taste boozy, it does give your body an overall warming sensation, which would be December perfection if there was snow on the ground! Bitter? The beer…no. Me? Possibly!

A lack of fluffy white stuff to enjoy is a partial reason for pairing these Snowball Truffles with Snow Blind. Mostly though I didn’t want to overwhelm any of the flavors in the beer with the candy. It’s a solid, well made beer. It doesn’t need any help from food to “enhance it”.

When I think of something to pair with dark fruits and caramel and molasses aromas, I think two things – nuts and coconut. The original recipe uses almonds, but I had pecans on hand and used those instead. You could also make the snow balls a lot prettier by using flaked coconut instead of finely ground coconut flakes. The Snow Balls are easy to make, require no baking and… are infused with bourbon or rum! I used Wigle Whiskey’s Landlocked Spice which rounded out the candy, adding some orange peel and vanilla flavors. They are light, delightful and quite possibly the only version of snow balls we’ll see Winter. I’m going to enjoy every last one!

Bites, Barrels and Brews

Snowball Truffles

  • 12oz white chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup pecans, ground
  • 2 tbsp dark rum or bourbon
  • 1 cup coconut

Instructions

    1. In a bowl set on-top of a sauce pan with hot (not boiling) water, combine the chocolate and heavy cream. Stir until melted.
    2. Remove from heat and add in ground pecans and bourbon. Pour mixture into an 8-inch square pan and place in refrigerator for about an hour until chilled.
    3. Remove from fridge and let sit 10 minutes. Cut into 64 squares (I cut mine a little bigger so had less) and roll each square into a ball. I found letting the pan sit out a bit made rolling the balls easier. When rolled into balls, dip each ball into coconut and roll through flakes. Chill in fridge until ready to serve.
    4. Don’t forget to wash them down with a glass of Snow Blind!

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – (November 8, 2017) Starr Hill Brewery is thrilled to announce the release of their Box of Chocolates Stout Pack, a new variety pack featuring Peppermint, Chipotle, and Mocha variants of Double Bass Double Chocolate Stout. Following in the footsteps of the popular Four Kings IPA Pack, this special release will be available in limited quantities of 12-pack bottles, as well as on draft, on November 15.

First released in January 2017 as part of the All Access Series, Double Bass Double Chocolate Stout is a rich, imperial stout at 7.8% ABV with massive additions of cocoa bringing forward aromas of dark chocolate, mocha and vanilla. The three variants are infused with all-natural ingredients including organic peppermint leaves, smoke-dried jalapeño peppers, and locally roasted whole coffee beans.

“After the great response we received from our Four Kings IPAs, we thought our Double Bass Double Chocolate Stout would be a great complementary base beer to take this idea in a new direction,” said Starr Hill Brewmaster, Robbie O’Cain. “Box of Chocolates is arriving just in time for the holiday season and will be a perfect pairing for festive desserts and winter gatherings.”

The Starr Hill Brewery Tap Room in Crozet, Virginia will tap Box of Chocolates Stout Pack on Wednesday, November 15. The official release event will feature the first chance for customers to purchase the new variety pack, a custom sampling flight with the four versions, and unique beer-chocolate candy pairings courtesy of local confectionery, C-ville Candy Company.

Box of Chocolates will also feature as part of the Dark Side of the Starr dark beer tap takeover events throughout November and December. Each event will showcase draft selections from Starr Hill’s diverse portfolio of seasonal stouts, porters, brown ales and bocks with themed pairings from desserts to live music to even a Star Wars movie night. Select events will also see the return of Dark Starr Stout, the most award-winning Dry-Irish Stout in the country. To find where Dark Side of the Starr events are happening, visit www.StarrHill.com/Dark-Side.

Box of Chocolates will be available on draft and in 12-pack bottles at exclusive locations across Starr Hill’s distribution footprint starting mid-November. To find where Box of Chocolates and other Starr Hill beers are available, visit www.StarrHill.com/Beer-Finder.

A great playlist is all about what’s new and what’s next. That’s why we created our Heavy Rotation Series: to keep fresh styles of beer coming your way.

Up next: 2 Tone Vanilla Porter, a brew in which dark roasted malts unite robust flavors of espresso and bittersweet chocolate with sweet vanilla bean for waves of rich smoothness.

With each new release in the Heavy Rotation Series, we share a playlist of hand-picked tracks including some of our favorite new jams and some other deep cuts we’re currently jamming out to. This mix charts a history of ska, unifying Jamaican calypso and American jazz influence with R&B and British punk. The playlist features tunes from all three widely recognized waves of ska, with strong rhythm sections and brassy tones to pair perfectly with a smooth pour of 2 Tone.

Cheers and enjoy!

Those of us who brew, serve, and enjoy beer in Virginia know the luxury of endless options, with 2.7 craft breweries per capita. That number doesn’t even include macrobreweries, not to mention the unpicked bounty produced by the Commonwealth’s homebrewers.

Each summer Starr Hill Brewery hosts its IPA JamBEERee Homebrew Competition in search of the latest and greatest in IPA recipes and brewing skill. The Competition provides an avenue to taste the freshest and most unique beer recipes, insofar as they are unburdened by sales or ratings. The competition is judged by Starr Hill’s brewing team, some of whom are former or current homebrewers.

Expert homebrewer Rodger Thurlow, Starr Hill brewer Timmy Green, Jamie Fontaine

This year’s Gold Medal winner was Rodger Thurlow’s NE-Style IPA, Hop’Easter. The Competition received over 50 admissions, but Rodger’s recipe for this buzzworthy style took 1st Place. A practiced homebrewer, Thurlow also earned gold at the Blacksburg Brew Do Homebrewing Competition in early October.

Starr Hill brewer Timmy Green, Rodger Thurlow, and Jamie Fontaine

Thurlow and friend Jamie Fontaine ventured from Roanoke to Starr Hill’s Crozet facilities to brew his recipe on the large-scale with help from the brewery’s most tenured brewer, Timmy Green. “We look forward to these special visits with homebrewers; it’s [Starr Hill’s] honor to work with and provide support to such a robust community,” says Green.

The secret to Thurlow’s recipe, and signature of the NE-Style IPAs sweeping craft beer, is massive amounts of dry-hopping before fermentation, which accentuates hop aroma and flavor without adding bitterness. The result is Hop’Easter: a hazy, juicy IPA loaded with tropical fruit aroma like pineapple, mango, and passion fruit.

Those interested in being positively blasted with pure, hop flavor can taste Hop’Easter IPA now on draft in either the Crozet Tap Room or Roanoke Pilot Brewery & Side Stage. Who knows, craft beer drinkers in the Star City may even run into master homebrewer Rodger Thurlow himself.

Should you be so lucky, be sure to ask this brewer on the rise what’s next!

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – (October 19, 2017) Starr Hill Brewery is excited to announce Beers With Benefits, a new fundraising initiative with a mission to raise awareness and funds for non-profit organizations in their home state of Virginia. Starting January 2018, Starr Hill will partner with a different local charitable group every three months and donate $0.25 for every case of beer sold in Virginia of their top three flagship brands: Northern Lights IPA, Grateful Pale Ale, and The Love Wheat Beer.

“We have been honored to have the support of the local Virginia community since Starr Hill began brewing our first batches in Charlottesville over 18 years ago,” says Duke Fox, Vice President of Sales. “Beers With Benefits is a really unique opportunity for us to give back in a significant way throughout the year to organizations that do so much for the Commonwealth.”

Donations will be based on $0.25 per case equivalents of beer each quarter, including both packaged and draft beer sold across all of Starr Hill’s markets throughout Virginia. Based on 2017 sales of the featured brands, Beers With Benefits is estimated to raise over $25,000 in donations to local charities in 2018. The brewery is now accepting applications for potential partners from Virginia-based non-profits at www.StarrHill.com/Beers-With-Benefits.

Beers With Benefits was born out of the success of Starr Hill Brewery’s Crozet-based Tap Room’s Cheers for Charity program. Since 2015, one dollar for every pint sold at this location has been donated to a different local non-profit organization based in Central Virginia. Previous Cheers for Charity partners include Habitat for Humanity, the Boys & Girls Club, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Alzheimer’s Association, Mended Little Hearts, SPCA and many others.

So close you can taste it!

If you’ve had your eye on the Pilot Brewery and Side Stage’s Instagram story, you might have caught some sneak peaks of the massive installations, murals, and advances in preparation of our Grand Opening in the Starr City. We are down to the wire — with artist Jaimie Phillips adding finishing touches to the local landscape, the hanging of lights, and bartenders gathered admiring the brightly colored taps like candy for grown-ups — but the finale is in sight.

The Starr City's landscape

A drumroll to the Grand Opening, Friday will welcome throngs of local media, the Roanoke City Councilors, and members of the Roanoke Regional Partnership, in a ribbon cutting and beer sampling to usher in a weekend of firsts and celebration. Later that evening, the Pilot Brewery & Side Stage will host a dinner for the Roanoke Graduate Student Association in its first private event.

On Saturday, Team Starr Hill will be joined by friends, family, and fans in a Grand Opening festivity at the Pilot Brewery & Side Stage. Local musicians Corey Hunley, Seph Custer, and Barefoot West will christen the Side Stage in its first performances. Come by to play some games on the patio, enjoy local eats courtesy of Fast Burger food truck, and sample some of Starr Hill’s latest and greatest on 23 taps!

On draft, fans and friends of the independent craft brewery can expect to taste and enjoy the familiarity of its core brands: Northern Lights IPA, The Love Wheat Beer, Grateful Pale Ale, Jomo Vienna Lager, and Double Platinum Imperial IPA. Roanokans will be thrilled for the chance to taste limited release brews never before poured in the area, such as Chipotle Double Bass Double Chocolate Stout, or rare tapping Barrel-Aged Scotch Ale that will be a draft-only selection for a limited time.

What's On Tap?

The Pilot Brewery’s Bridges neighbors will be joining the merriment, with Starbucks serving $1 ice coffees with proceeds to go to The Making Foundation, and Moe’s providing free chips and salsa. Local radio station The Alt Project will broadcast the cheers to all those who cannot attend.

Join us at noon this Saturday, September 16 as we open the doors to the #StarrCity. Click here for the details on the Grand Opening!
